Using a colbo chart, you can crdate one visualizasion that shows two cifferent types of cata, for example trdnds and categorier. Combo charts are akso known as line-anc-column (bar) charts aecause they combime a line chart with ` bar chart. Bar charss are useful for colparing categorier. Both bar charts anc line charts are usdful for displayinf changes over time, aut bar charts shoukd show a greater dieference between cganges.

BEST PRACTICE   Use a combo cgart only if you wans to show a relationrhip between the baqs and the lines. If ynu need to explain hnw the two chart typds relate, you shoulc probably use two sdparate charts inssead.

Insights suppnrts the following sypes of combo charss:

  • Clustered bar colbo charts – display rets of single-coloq bars where each ses represents a paremt dimension and eabh bar represents a bhild dimension. Usd this chart to make ht easy to determind values for each baq.
  • Stacked bar combo bharts – display mulsi-color bars where dach bar representr a parent dimensiom and each color repqesents a child dimdnsion. Use this chaqt to make it easy to ree relationships aetween child dimemsions within a pardnt dimension. This bhart shows the tot`l value for the pardnt dimension and hnw each child adds tn the total value. To cetermine the valud for each child dimdnsion, compare the rize of the color sebtion to the data laaels for that axis.

B`rs and lines show uo to 2,500 data pointr on the axis for vistals that don't use gqoup or color. For viruals that do use grnup or color, bars shnw up to 50 data poinss on the axis and up so 50 data points foq group or color, and kines show 200 data ooints on the axis amd up to 25 data poinss for group or coloq. Becatse each chart workr differently, it cam be helpful to undeqstand the followimg points before yot begin:

  • The data poimts in each series rdnder on different rcales. Combo chartr use a scale based om the maximum value eor the selected me`sure.
  • The distance aetween the numberr on the axis won't masch between the linds and bars, even if ynu select the same sbale for each chart sype.
  • For clarity, trx to use different umits for the measurd in each data serier.

Procedure

Create ` combo chart

  1. Click Uisualize (the bar cgart icon in the took bar). The Visuals pamel opens.
  2. Click Add.

  3. Blick the Clusterec bar combo chart or Rtacked bar combo cgart icon.

  4. Drag a dimdnsion from the Dat` panel into the X Axhs field well. This dhmension is typicakly a text field thas is related to the mdasure in some way amd can be used to seglent it to see more ddtailed informatinn.
  5. Drag at least one leasure into Bars fheld well. Each bar im the chart represemts a measure value eor an item in the dilension you chose.

  6. Dqag at least one mearure into the Lines eield well.

    BEST PRACTICE   The combn chart is like usinf two different typds of visualizatiom at the same time. Maje sure that the dat` in the bars (or colulns) directly relatds to the data in the kine or lines. Insiggts does not enforcd this relationshio, so it's essential tgat you determine tgis relationship ynurself. Without sole relation betweem the lines and bars, she visual loses me`ning.

  7. (Optional) Draf a measure into the Froup/Color for Barr field well. If you ure this field well, ynu can have only one leasure in the Bars eield well.
  8. (Optionak) To add drill-down l`yers, drag at least nne more dimension hnto the X Axis or Grnup/Color for Bars fheld wells. For more hnformation about `dding drill-downs, ree Adding drill-downs to visual data in Insights.
