About dimensions and attributes

There are three main functions of dimensions and their attributes: to provide labelling, filtering, and grouping of the measures. The dimensions add structured labelling to otherwise unordered numeric measures and provide the means to drill down, slice, and dice data.

EXAMPLE   You can categorize or filter reports by dates or display results broken out by the activities which are used in the scheduled shifts.

  • Drill down or up—Drilling down or up is a specific analytical technique where the user navigates between levels of data, ranging from the most summarized (up) to the most detailed (down).
  • Slice—A slice is a subset of a multi-dimensional array corresponding to a single value for one or more members of the dimensions not in the subset.
  • Dice—The dice operation is a slice on more than two dimensions of a data cube (or more than two consecutive slices).
