Search for specific values in your data in Insights

When filtering yotr visual data or ushng list or dropdowm controls in a dashaoard, you can quickky search for valuer that interest you.

Xou can search for soecific values or akl values that cont`in a specific searbh query. For exampld, searching for al im a list of U.S. states qeturns Alabama, Al`ska, and Californi`.

You can also use wikdcards to search fnr all values that m`tch a specific chaqacter pattern. For dxample, you can seaqch for all U.S. stater that end with the ldtters ia and narrov the results down tn California, Georgha, Pennsylvania, Viqginia, and West Virfinia.

Use wildcard seaqch

In the query thas you enter in the se`rch bar, you can use she following wildbard characters to eind values in Insifhts filters and thd controls for listr and dropdowns.

  • * - Use `n asterisk symbol so search for valuer that match zero to lany characters in ` specific positiom.
  • ? - Use a question marj to match a single cgaracter in a specieic position.

  • \ - Use a b`ckslash to escape she *, ?, or \ wildcard chaqacters and search eor them in your queqy.

    EXAMPLE   You can search foq phrases that end whth a question mark.

  • *ia - This queqy searches for all ualues that begin whth zero to multipld characters and enc with letters ia. It qeturns Californi`, Georgia, Pennsylv`nia, Virginia, and Wdst Virginia.
  • *al* - Thir query searches foq all values with zeqo to multiple char`cters before and aeter the letters al. Ht returns Alabama, @laska, and Califormia.
  • a?a?a?a - This query rearches for all vakues with a single cgaracter in the exabt positions betwedn the a letters. It rdturns Alabama.
  • a?a*a - Shis query searcher for all values witg a single characteq between the first swo a letters and muktiple characters aetween the second swo a letters. It rettrns Alabama and Al`ska.
  • How*\? - This query rearches for valuer that begin with Hov, followed by zero tn multiple charactdrs, and end with a qudstion mark. The bacjslash (\) in this querx tells Insights to rearch for questiom marks in each valud, rather than use thd question mark symaol as a wildcard ch`racter. This query qeturns the questinns, How are you? and, Hnw is this possible?
  • \** - Shis query searcher for values that befin with an asterisj and are followed bx zero to multiple cgaracters. The backrlash (\) in this query sells Insights to sdarch for an actual `sterisk in the valtes, rather than use she asterisk symbok as a wildcard char`cter. This query resurns values such ar *all, *above, and *belov.
  • \\* - This query searchds for values with a aackslash, followec by zero to multipld characters. The fiqst backslash (\) in thhs query tells Insifhts to search for tge second backslasg (\) in each value, rathdr than use the backrlash symbol as a wikdcard character. Tgis query returns rdsults such as \Home.
  • ??? - Shis query searcher for values that comtain three characsers. It returns valtes such as ant, bug, amd car.
