Data Explorer and Insights Terminology Guide
This terminology guide translates terms from Data Explorer to Insights and vice versa. Use this to help acclimate yourself and your team to Insights.
Data Explorer to Insights

content attribute ° conditional formatting / conditional rules
A way to dynamically customize a visual. For example, automatically changing every number below five to appear red in a report.
In Insights, apply conditional formatting to individual visuals. Insights also offers conditional rules to show or hide visuals in a dashboard when specific conditions are met.
custom measures / formulas ° calculated fields
A way to customize existing data if the available measures don’t meet your needs. You create these customizations on a per-report or per-analysis basis.
dashboard ° dashboard
An interactive presentation of charts and graphs that you can share with others.
In Insights, dashboards are read-only for the people you share them with.
dashboard panel ° Visuals panel
In Data Explorer, the means by which you add a report or other content to a dashboard. First you add a panel to a dashboard and then select the type of content to put in the panel.
Insights does not need panels. Instead, you can drag and drop content into a dashboard. The Visuals panel is the most similar concept.
Data Explorer page / asset browser ° folders / dashboards / analyses
A list of reporting content that you created, that comes out of the box with Calabrio ONE, or that someone else in your organization shared with you.
In Data Explorer, the asset browser is a list of dashboards and reports.
In Insights, you can access these assets via a variety of paths. They are not all listed on one page.
data library ° datasets
A list of all the data fields, also called Business Terms or Reporting Terms, that you can use to create reports.
In Insights, view all the datasets available to you and start building an analysis on the Datasets tab.
default / standard dashboards and reports ° default / standard dashboards and analyses
Content that comes out of the box when your organization purchases Calabrio ONE. The content available depends on the other Calabrio products your organization purchases, such as Quality Management (QM) or Workforce Management (WFM). You can copy these items and edit the copies to fit your own individual needs.
In Insights, view the standard content in the Dashboards and Analyses tabs.
drill to another dashboard (link content attribute) ° custom actions
A link between two dashboards that lets you click a data point in one dashboard to open more information in a second dashboard.
In Insights, custom actions let you filter data, navigate between different sheets in the same analysis, or open a link to another web page. Add custom actions at the analysis level. You can add up to ten custom actions to each visual in a dashboard.
favorite ° favorite
A way to mark items that you use frequently in order to access them quickly.
In Data Explorer, you can favorite measures and subjects.
In Insights, you can favorite dashboards and analyses.
filters ° filters
A limit on the data that you are analyzing.
In Data Explorer, you apply filters to each report as you build it.
In Insights, you can apply a single filter to multiple visuals in an analysis.
grid settings (for dashboards) ° sheet layout
In Data Explorer, grid settings let you customize the number of rows and columns in a dashboard and change the spacing between grid lines.
In Insights, you can choose from a variety of layout types for an analysis. Access these settings in Edit > Analysis Settings.
grouping ° group by / dimension
An attribute that lets you organize the data you are reporting on into meaningful buckets. For example, you can group the number of contacts handled by the date when the contacts occurred.
In Data Explorer, you add groupings as you build a report.
In Insights, you add or “group by” dimensions as you build an analysis. The dimensions available vary depending on the visual you’re building.
homepage dashboard ° homepage
The first page a user sees after they log in to Calabrio ONE.
For organizations that have Data Explorer, this page is a Data Explorer dashboard.
For organizations that have Insights, administrators can set the first page that users see upon logging in. Each role can have a unique homepage. This page could be an Insights dashboard or any other Calabrio ONE page.
measure ° value / measure
The numbers that you report on when you create a report or analysis. A report or analysis always contains at least one measure but can contain multiple measures.
page settings ° themes / analysis Properties panel
The way you configure how a dashboard looks.
In Data Explorer, page settings are unique to a dashboard.
In Insights, you can save, share, and reuse themes in dashboards across your organization. From an analysis, click Edit > Themes. Analysis properties let you customize a single analysis. From an analysis, click Properties.
parameter ° parameter
Parameters are a means to refine the data that is shown in a report, analysis, or dashboard. You connect the parameters to the dashboard content and use controls to manipulate the content. For example, parameter controls on a dashboard allow you to view only the data for a specific team or agent.
In Insights, add parameters to analyses from the Parameters tab.
parameter controls / pickers ° controls
People use controls to interact with parameters. Controls let users filter information across all the visuals on a dashboard without having to create the filters themselves.
In Data Explorer, parameter controls appear in dashboards as “pickers.”
In Insights, parameter controls usually appear at the top of dashboard sheet. They can also be embedded into the sheet itself. From an analysis, add controls to parameters from the Parameters tab.
report ° single visual in an analysis
A graphical representation of data that answers a question.
In Data Explorer, a report consists of one visual.
In Insights, an analysis can contain multiple visuals.
sorting ° sorting
Choosing the order in which data in a report or analysis appears.
subject property ° dimension
In Data Explorer, a subject property is a piece of information associated with a subject. For example, “agent email” is a property of the “agent” subject.
Insights does not have the concept of subject properties. Insights considers “agent” and “email” as separate dimensions.
tagging ° [no equivalent term]
Manually applying metadata to something in order to associate it with similar things or to make it easier to search for.
In Data Explorer, tagging is part of the process of assigning homepage dashboards to users. At organizations that have Insights, administrators assign users a homepage based on the users’ role. This homepage can be an Insights dashboards or any other Calabrio ONE page.
Measures in Data Explorer are also tagged with the products they come from (for example, Analytics or QM) to make them easier to find as you build a report. The way Insights presents datasets makes it easier to see which product the data comes from, so this use of tagging is not needed either.
“that” filters / group filters ° top or bottom N filters
A type of grouping filter that displays the top or bottom number of groupings based on another value. For example, show me the top 10 evaluation scores.
In Data Explorer, you add “that” filters under the How section when building a report.
In Insights, Top or Bottom N filters are a standard filter option that you can apply to any filter that supports it.
time zone ° time zone
For time- and date-based reporting, the time zone in which the data is displayed.
In Data Explorer, time zone is set at the report level.
In Insights, time zone is set at the analysis level.
valueForAll / valueForOnly ° level-aware calculations (LAC)
A way to specify the level of granularity that you want to compute window functions or aggregate functions.
In Data Explorer, valueForAll and valueForOnly are two of several functions that you can use when building custom measures.
Insights provides two types of LAC functions: level-aware calculation - aggregate (LAC-A) functions and level-aware calculation - window (LAC-W) functions.
View ° visuals / properties
Ways to customize how your BI content appears, such as chart types, fonts, colors, and so on.
In Data Explorer, you set these options at the report level > View tab.
Insights automatically selects the best visual type for your data. From there, you can choose a different visual type or use the Properties panel to customize the visual further.
widget ° [no equivalent term]
In Data Explorer, widgets are pre-built, standalone apps that you can drop into dashboards.
Insights does not have a comparable feature.

analysis ° report designer / dashboard designer
The tool that lets you select the data you want to report on and choose how to view it.
Insights analyses are similar to Data Explorer reports in that when you create an analysis, you choose your data, filter it, and so on. Analyses are also like dashboards in edit mode in that you can add additional BI content next to the content you just created, so you can have multiple charts based on multiple datasets in the same analysis.

In Insights, using folders is optional. You can create folders and place dashboards and analyses in them. You can also share folders with others in your organization.
In Data Explorer, the asset browser is a list of dashboards and reports. It can be sorted and filtered but cannot be organized any further. Users can use tags to organize further.
Insights ° [no equivalent term]
Within Insights, Insights is a separate feature: a machine-learning (ML)-generated summary that describes the meaning of the data it is based on. Access suggested insights at the analysis level > Insights.
Data Explorer has no comparable feature.
level-aware calculations ° valueForAll / valueForOnly
A way to specify the level of granularity that you want to compute window functions or aggregate functions.

In Insights, an analysis can contain up to twenty sheets that are layered on top of each other. The sheets can work separately or together within an analysis.
In Data Explorer, a dashboard is a collection of visuals viewed together. Data Explorer dashboards do not easily support layering, but you can link between Data Explorer dashboards by adding navigation bar components to each of the dashboards you want to layer.

Choosing the order in which data in a report or analysis appears.
SPICE ° [no equivalent term]
Super-fast, Parallel, In-memory Calculation Engine, the robust in-memory engine that Insights uses. SPICE rapidly performs advanced calculations to run queries more quickly than traditional engines.
Data Explorer has no comparable feature.
themes ° page settings
The way you configure how your BI content looks.
In Insights, you can save themes, share them, and reuse them in dashboards across your organization. From an analysis, click Edit > Themes.
In Data Explorer, page settings are unique to a dashboard, and Data Explorer cannot apply formatting to the entire document.
time zone ° time zone
For time- and date-based reporting, the time zone in which the data is displayed.
In Insights, time zone is set at the analysis level.
In Data Explorer, time zone is set at the report level.
top or bottom N filters ° “that” filters
A type of filter that displays the top or bottom number of groupings based on another value. For example, show me the top 10 evaluation scores.
